The Invigilator Collective Agreement, that is, the document governing the working conditions for all invigilators at McGill, expires on December 1, 2025. This means that we have an opportunity to re-negotiate this agreement to improve our working conditions (anything from pay to breaks, to hiring, to protections against harassment).

The first step of the bargaining process is understanding how invigilators feel about their work conditions and what they would like to change. A major priority the Association of Graduate Students Employed at McGill (AGSEM) is advocating for in the 2022-23 academic year is improved access to mental health services for graduate student employees.

Research demonstrates the pandemic has taken a toll on the mental health of graduate students who are burdened by research, teaching, and other academic responsibilities ( Chirikov et al., 2020; Zahneis & June, 2020). The Post-Graduate Students’ Society (PGSS) and AGSEM survey about in-person comfort levels for Fall 2021 confirmed that many graduate students struggle with a lack of mental health support.

AGSEM and PGSS have teamed up yet again to bring you a second Survey to gauge McGill graduate students’ Fall 2021 in-person comfort levels. This survey presents different scenarios for Fall 21, for the purposes of providing PGSS and AGSEM with feedback on what positions to take when advocating on behalf of grad students to McGill administration. Relevant data may also be shared with AMURE, AMUSE, MCLIU, and MAUT.

One of our major bargaining mandates is to ensure that there is a clear distinction between stipends and TA wages. AGSEM members have expressed concern that ambiguities around types of funding has resulted in stagnant graduate student funding and, in some cases, a significant loss to a student’s overall funding.

Update: the proposed Involuntary Leave Policy has been suspended. The Dean of Students’ website suggests that it will not be re-introduced this year. You can read this statement and the draft of the policy here.
